Citizenship can be earned by marriage, descent, or registration by the husband or widow/widower of a Sri Lankan citizen. Naturalization is a process that allows those who have performed outstanding public service or are prominent in professional, commercial, industrial, or agricultural life to become citizens.
Citizenship by Registration
Persons are entitled to registration as citizens. This section applies to any applicant for registration as a citizen of Ceylon who meets the following criteria. The applicant:
- is of full age and sound mind.
- is a resident of Ceylon, and the applicant is a resident of Ceylon.
- is a person whose mother is or was a citizen of Ceylon by descent if she had been alive on the appointed date, and who, if married, has lived in Ceylon for seven years immediately preceding the date of the application, or has lived in Ceylon for ten years immediately preceding the date of the application,
- is habitually resident in Ceylon and intends to remain there.
By Descent
The citizenship of people born before a certain date is passed down through their families. was born in Ceylon, subject to the other provisions of this Part. His paternal grandfather and paternal great grandfather were both born on the island of Ceylon. The citizenship of people born before a certain date is passed down through their families. conditions are met:
- his father and paternal grandfather were both born in Ceylon, or (b)his father and paternal grandfather were both born in India.
- His paternal grandfather and paternal great grandfather were both born on the island of Ceylon.
By descent, people born after the date set by the government can become citizens. A person born in Ceylon on or after the designated date has the status of a citizen of Ceylon by descent if his parent is a citizen of Ceylon at the time of his birth.
When a person is born outside of Ceylon on or after the date set out in this Part, he or she has the same rights as a person born in Ceylon. his parent is a citizen of Ceylon at the time of his birth and the birth is registered in the prescribed manner within one year of the date of birth, or within such further period as the Minister may allow for a good cause:
- at the office of a Ceylonese consular official in the country of origin, or
- at the Minister’s office in Ceylon.
