Japan: cost of relocation

Passport of Japan

Accommodation costs are generally affordable and food and drinks are nicely priced. Most of Japanโ€™s best attractions are very affordable or free and, while some actions could set you back a fair amount, thereโ€™s a lot to do at a lower price place too. Japan is an expensive destination, particularly if you’re traveling on a budget. It does help to find a host that speaks English, but they are generally eager to show you around their municipality.

Immigration to Japan by resident status

Permanent resident

Foreign citizens who are long-term residents in Japan under another visa order similar to a working visa or as the partner of a Japanese public are eligible to apply for permanent residency status.

The permission for a permanent residency status is at the discretion of the Immigration Bureau and dependent on the satisfaction of several detailed criteria similar as the length of stay, capability to make an independent living, a record of duty payments, and proven benefits to Japan in terms of public service or professional conditioning. According to the Migratory Integration Policy Index, endless occupancy laws were less strict than those in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Immigration through marriage

Global marriage migration used to represent 25 percent of permanent migration flows to Japan, but this trend has been in decline since a peak in 2006. In the 1980s adding figures of Japanese men were registering marriages in Japan to women from China, Korea, and the Philippines.

Japan-registered marriage statistics alone may not present a comprehensive picture of the figures of global marriages in Japan as marriages registered overseas may also contribute to total indigenous partner figures. Once married, foreign partners may also, if certain criteria are satisfied, change their visa status to Permanent Resident or other visa orders. 2012 Ministry of Justice data indicates that of all non-natives in Japan,7.5 percent are residents in Japan under a visa designation as a partner of a Japanese public.

Long-term resides on limited-duration employment

At the end of December 2014, approximately two million nonnatives were staying in Japan. Of this number(32 percent) were considered long-term, but nonpermanent residents were those granted visas for 12 months or further. Most of the long-term residents in Japan on limited-duration work or study visas were from Asia. Chinese made up the largest portion of this group, followed by Filipinos, and Koreans. Thai, Vietnamese, and Taiwanese long-term residents, and those from other Asian countries.

Naturalization

In 2015, operations for Japanese citizenship were approved. The number of foreign residents in Japan applying to gain Japanese citizenship peaked in 2008 but declined in 2015. Processing of operations can take up to 18 months. operation criteria are set intentionally high and inspectors are granted a degree of discretion in the interpretation of eligibility and good conduct criteria.

Other than the demand to renounce foreign citizenship, naturalization criteria are analogous to other advanced countries similar to the US, although there’s no citizenship test. About 99 percent of naturalization operations in Japan are approved, compared to about 90 percent in the US.

Prices of visa

Freights must be paid for the allocation of visas. The charges are about three thousand yen for a single-entry visa, six thousand yen for a double-entry or multiple-entry visa, and 700 yen for a traveling visa. Freights are collected in the currency of the country(region) in which the Embassy/ Consulate General is located.

No freights are demanded if the visa is not issued. The processing charges are needed in addition to the visa allocation freights in case the visa operation is made through an approved agency by the Embassy/ Consulate General of Japan.
