Cost of living in Hawaii – full guide

Hawaii is a tropical paradise and the dream of many people since it is known for its beautiful landscapes and ethnic population. In general, the living expenses in the paradise state are equal to the name but may vary greatly depending on the zone. Other significant islands in Hawaii are Ni’hau, Kaua’i, O’ahu, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Kaho’olawe, Maui, and Hawai’i (island).

Housing

Based on the data the housing index of Hawaii for Q1 2024 is 313. 2, which states that Hawaii’s housing expense is 101 percent. The number of hours of sleep that college students get is 4 percent less than the USA average. This one is somewhat justifiable bearing in mind the geographical position of the state and the relatively smaller land size of the state.

Redirecting that housing index back to reality, here are the median sale prices obtained from the last report of the previous year. The median single-family home sale price for Oahu was $996,500 and for condos, it was $510,000.

Palm Trees & Sky

Hawaii is among the most costly places to reside in the U. S due to the lack of space for construction, commitment to import a lot of goods, and because people want to reside in Hawaii. The prices of homes are far above the average of the entire country, rent could be rather high and depends on the area and the type of flat.

The first thing that any person should do to effectively live here is to be fully aware of the costs that are expected of him or her in the future. Below are some of the most important components of the cost of living that include the following:

Education

The education systems of Hawaii are good for your children in the following schools. There is quite a good variety of private schools, particularly in Oahu. But there is also a good number of the great public schools too. Tuition in private schools in Hawaii ranges from $12,280 to $60,000 depending on the kind of entrance and the school. Here for more details about the private schools available in Oahu Click on the link. As on the Mainland public education is mostly offered free of charge.

Transportation

Transportation is among the most important things that people in Hawaii have to spend money on as often as monthly since the prices of gasoline are some of the highest in the country. That is because of the geographic location as all the gas needed for the operations has to be transported. The fuel prices at the pump in Oahu for Regular, Plus, Premium and Diesel was at $4. 539, $4. 739, $4. 989, and $5. 587 respectively.

Insurance

Homeowner’s insurance will be a periodical expense but essential since it will aid in the payment of fire, natural calamities, theft and other misfortunes. It varies from four hundred and ninety US dollars to five hundred and eighty-two US dollars per year for a $250,000 basic home policy. This will not cover most homes in Hawaii since the average home prices are relatively higher than the national average and since most homes will fall short of this range, it’s better to use this as a rough guide- approximately $1000 per $500,000 of property value. Therefore, the final premium is not the same with some factors and usually, hurricane insurance has to be purchased separately.

Healthcare insurance is compulsory and all employers have the obligation of offering prepaid health care to all qualifying employees in Hawaii. This will be mostly the permanent employees and might also include some of the permanent but part-time employees. As a rule, it is useful to turn to the organization of interest to ensure one can conduct the study in question. Those who do not have an employer-sponsored health plan can only purchase a plan during the Open Enrollment, which happens once every year; the individual premium is approximately $400 per month.
