Maldives: citizenship of Maldives

Flag of Maldives

The Maldives is noted for its rich maritime habitat and critical trade lanes, despite being Asia’s smallest nation in regards to geographical area and populace. It used to be one of the globe’s impoverished countries, but now this cluster of 1,192 beautiful tropical islands has a middle-income GDP with a per capita revenue of USD 15,287.

Maldivian nationality law

The Maldivian nationality statute, as well as the pertinent articles of the Maldives Charter, includes Maldivian citizenship policy. Citizenship in the Republic of the Maldives can be acquired through adoption, inheritance, marriage to a Maldivian national, or registration.

Ways to become a citizen of Maldives

There are five following ways you can acquire nationality in the country:

By birth

Nationality in the Republic of the Maldives is not immediately conferred except at least one of the child’s parents is a Maldivian national at the moment of birth. Another option for a child to get citizenship is if they are found orphaned with no information of the parents’ details.

By marriage

Foreign partners of Maldivian nationals are not instantly awarded nationality, and they are not obligated to do so.

By adoption

If the child was adopted by at least one Maldivian national parent, he could gain nationality. The adoption process, on the other hand, must be carried out under the laws of the country.

By Decent

An individual would be a Maldivian national by blood if at least one of their ancestors were a Maldivian native at the moment of their birth. The child’s birthplace is not a determining element.

Naturalization

Any individual wishing to become a Maldivian national must file a handwritten request to the Foreign ministry if they meet the essential criteria such as:

  • The religion they follow is Islam,
  • The candidate is mentally stable,
  • They are older than 21,
  • The applicant has been raised in the Maldives for more than 12 years,
  • They have a thorough understanding of Maldivian Law,
  • They can write and speak in Dhivehi.

The governor of the Maldives may, in his judgment, award nationality to anyone who applies for or has applied for identification as a Maldivian, provided to the requirements of this Law being met.

Dual citizenship

The Maldives government recognizes dual citizenship. If a Maldivian national applies for citizenship in another country, they do not have to give up their Maldivian citizenship.

Losing citizenship in the Maldives

If you want to give up your Maldivian citizenship, you must request the authorities. Aside from that, the rules will not just revoke your citizenship because you made a small error or applied for citizenship in another country.

Working in the Maldives

More than a majority of the Maldivian populace, or 73 percent, works in the commercial market. It is trailed by the Industrial market, which accounts for 23%, and the Farming market, which accounts for 4%. Residents and international people looking for work can find work in the critical sectors of tourism, fish farming, and transportation. Boat construction, coconut preparation, weaved carpets, cable, arts, reef, and sand mining are other sectors that can provide job opportunities.

Ending note

There are numerous advantages to becoming a Maldivian citizen. By permitting dual nationality, the authorities have made the process considerably more manageable. Thousands of tourists visit the land each year, contributing significantly to the market’s growth. That implies that if you launch a business there with good planning and assistance, you may profit handsomely while enjoying the nationality of the world’s top tourist destination.
