Japanese passport – in first place in the world ranking

A Japanese passport gives its holder the right to visa-free travel to 191 countries and regions, which has brought it to first place in the world. In January 2020, the British consulting company Henley & Partners ranked the Japanese passport in 1st place in the global Passport Index rating.

The index shows how many of 199 countries and regions around the world passport holders can travel without a prior visa. Singapore is in second place with 190 countries, followed by South Korea and Germany (189 countries and regions).

In 2019, Japan and Singapore shared first place, but in June 2019, holders of Japanese passports were allowed visa-free travel to Brazil, which brought Japan to 1st place.
