There’s still more to know if you plan on immigrating to Hungary. Hungary is a great place to live if you are planning on obtaining permanent residency for any European country or even citizenship.

If you are planning on immigrating to Magyarorszag for permanent residence or a short visit, there are crucial things you should know. Such as the policies that dictate the immigration process for non-EU nationals and what you should do on arrival.

The entire process for immigrating to Hungary is somewhat complex but we’ll try to explain the entire process of immigrating to Hungary for you to understand.

The official language is Hungarian and its official currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). There has been declared the date for the adoption of the Euro. This is just a mere overview of the country, here’s what you need to know if you plan on moving to Hungary.

Eligibilities

The conditions for immigration to Hungary depend on the time you want to stay in the country and the purpose of your visit. Hungry has been an EU member state since 2004 and a state in the Schengen Area since 2007.

Since that time travel visas and residence permits issued by an EU or the Schengen Member States are valid also in Magyarorszag. What this essentially means is that EU nationals and citizens of any state in the Schengen region can immigrate to Hungary without any travel visas/ or obtaining residence permits.

The Schengen Area regulations only apply to people who plan to stay in the country for not more than 90 days. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, there are laws that imply to nationals of each member state concerned.

Foreign nationals from non-EU/EEA countries must apply for a valid residence permit and travel visa if they want to immigrate to Hungary. If you are immigrating to the country for work, you must possess a work permit.

The Minister of National Economy updates the number of work permits that can be issued to foreign nationals annually. They are published in the Official Hungarian Gazette (Magyar Közlöny).

Types of visa available to immigrants

There are a lot of visas issued to foreigners who plan on immigrating to Hungary. Most people that apply for these visas are from Non-EU member states. 

Based on your needs or category, you must possess the following Visa before you can migrate to Hungary.

Short stay visa (C)

This visa allows its beneficiary to attain multiple accesses to enter and exit the country. The beneficiary of this visa can stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days.

Seasonal employment visa

This class of visa is issued for the purpose of employment. The beneficiary gains multiple entries in case of employment for up to six months. The seasonal Hungarian Employment Office.

Long stay visa (D) & residence permits

A foreigner from non-EU countries that want to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days must apply for a long-term residence permit before they travel to the country.

The long-stay visa allows the beneficiary to immigrate to Hungary and acquire a Hungarian residence permit which is issued by the Hungarian Immigration Office.

This long-stay visa is valid for a one-year and allows the beneficiary to enter the once in a 30 days period. This visa type is usually attained by foreigners seeking permanent residence or naturalization.

Required Documents

All foreigners who want to immigrate to Magyarorszag must possess the following documents:

  • A valid passport or the permits of your home country.
  • Bank statement as proof of sustenance.
  • One passport-size photograph.
  • Evidence of residential address.
  • Evidence of health insurance.
  • Medical certificate.
  • A copy of your birth certificate (if applicable).
  • A copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable).
  • Business plan [if you want to start a business in the country].

Hungarian residence permit and visa cost about €60 and it takes about 3 months to process. If you plan to attain citizenship rights in this country, you must reside in Hungary for 8 years of continuous lawful residence. You must also:

  • Have no criminal record and have not been indicted in any criminal case at the time of your citizenship application.
  • Have assurance subsistence and occupancy.
  • Your naturalization does not expose the interests of Hungaria.
  • Passed the exam regarding the Hungarian constitutional system in the Hungarian language.

If you meet all the listed requirements, you’ll have no problem obtaining Hungarian nationality. Dual citizenship is also recognized in Hungary. You do not need to renounce your current nationality to become a citizen of Hungary.
